Your guide to PrEP. Always at hand.
Learn about PrEP, prepare questions for your doctor and find out more about taking it and attending regular reviews. Read POTENT's brochure here or save it for later. The original brochure is in Serbian.
POTENT's brochure provides general information about PrEP and also describes visiting Checkpoint. For Potent Extra Care's online service, follow the steps on this website and your doctor's instructions.
PrEP is preventive medication for people who do not have HIV. When taken as prescribed, it reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by more than 99%. An HIV test and a medical assessment are needed before starting. With oral PrEP, regular HIV testing and medical reviews usually take place every three months. PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.
EACS Guidelines : European clinical guidelines; version 13.0 was available at the time of review.
The dosing regimen depends on the medication, your health and sexual practices. Your doctor helps you choose an appropriate regimen. International guidelines also cover options that may not be available in Serbia.
Experience with PrEP and safe use
Information about tolerability, dosing regimens, testing and medical reviews is based on the second edition of POTENT's brochure, pages 5-9 and 14-19. It also describes rare side effects, limitations and the risks of obtaining medication without professional support.
The approval date comes from the FDA document on Truvada for PrEP (PDF): the medication was approved for PrEP in the US on 16 July 2012. This is not the date PrEP was introduced in Serbia.
The statement about millions of users is supported by the UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2025 (PDF): around 3.9 million people used PrEP during 2024. This figure refers to people who used it during the year, not necessarily every day.
Equal effectiveness of daily and on-demand regimens refers to correct use in groups for whom the regimen is appropriate. The doctor assesses the type of exposure, health conditions, other medications and the need for additional monitoring. Hepatitis B alone does not mean PrEP can never be used; it requires a plan for taking and, if necessary, stopping it. An HIV test and consultation every three months do not mean that every laboratory test is repeated at that interval.
Online PrEP service
Play Safe provides information about online PrEP consultations at Potent Extra Care through Apoteka.rs. The consultation link opens Dr Biljana Begović Vuksanović's profile.
The planned process includes a relevant questionnaire on Apoteka.rs, an online consultation, tests as instructed by the doctor and submission of results through the platform. After reviewing the results, the doctor decides whether to prescribe PrEP. Prescription fulfilment and delivery options depend on the partner service's terms.
Open Dr Biljana's profile through the consultation section to book in Apoteka.rs. Check current fees and availability in the app.
Apoteka.rs : the public website of the platform for finding, reserving and collecting pharmaceutical products.
POTENT's public testing programme and the planned online service follow different processes. Public guides are educational resources; the doctor determines an individual testing and PrEP plan during the consultation.
If possible exposure has already happened
PEP is emergency prevention after possible exposure to HIV. Seek medical assessment immediately and start treatment within 72 hours at the latest. The sooner, the better. Do not wait for a routine PrEP appointment.
Play Safe is an information initiative by POTENT. The content explains medical information in accessible terms and helps you start a conversation with a doctor. It is not an individual medical assessment and does not imply endorsement of this website by international health organisations.
